What do you remember?

Obtained this from the Alchemist.

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don’t speak often, please post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want — good or bad. When you’re finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you.

The last memory I have of the two of us together was in Chomp Chomp gorging ourselves with sambal stingray, satay, hokkien fried noodles and chai dao kwei. You were quieter than usual, perhaps due to the abovementioned stuffing of faces (I was doing the same). Or perhaps you had just become quieter since you went away. Or maybe Ed wasn't letting either of us get a word in.

I can't say I have a very clear memory of you of the time before I went away. It is a little embarassing to admit this, but I saw in you what I might become myself - pompous, opinionated, hopelessly anal-retentive and paranoid. You may remember that these traits were already becoming apparent in my fledgling personality. But I liked you because of those things, not in spite of them. And also because you were genuine, interesting and self-aware. You said self-absorption was okay if you were interesting. (I was a conceited teenager - this may have been your way of softening the blow.) Now I think self-absorption is only a good thing if it turns into self-awareness.

Now I find that I am pompous, opinionated, anal and paranoid. But I also like to think that I am a genuine, thoughtful person with a considered view of myself and the world around me. I think this similarity (between the person I am now and the person you were six years ago) is why, even though we don't speak often, and even though you might have changed in the intervening years, I count you as a friend.

A dinner in Berkeley that never took place.

Ah, I remember when you had hair and were thinner. We were all squeezed into my newly-renovated room. We even had little cardboard models. And for a season, there was Kenneth and the most amazing Robo Rally games.

Tor - I remember that night too. You know, I never remember the conversations I have with you (or anyone else for that matter) until they remind me of it, and then I realise how much of an arse I was, and how much impact I had in spite (or because of) it.

Ben - You free this coming week? You're still in Singapore right?

Oh, still trying to fully recover from a nasty throat infection. A cough is all that remains, but it prevents me from conversing — or, more importantly, exercising — much.
